Following the major earthquake which took place on October 30, 2020, the church of Saint Polycarp suffered significant damage. Only the bell tower, which had been severely damaged, was restored to its former stature in January 2022.
The restoration works for the church building just began and should last two years.
This project is very important for our diocese because the church is the heart of the Christian presence in Izmir. It is part of the former convent of the French Capuchins, which was built in 1625, and holds magnificent frescoes on its walls. Many tourists visit the church in groups or individually. During the two daily opening hours, more than 50 visitors who are Christians of all denominations as well as non-Christians visit the church, which was classified in the first category as regards historical monuments.
The groundwater reaches up to approximately 80 cm below the floor of the church. All issues pertaining to the insulation of foundations and the drainage system had been completely neglected. Saving this church means giving hope back to our community because it bears the memory of our predecessor, the bishop and martyr Saint Polycarp. Itmeans that many pilgrims will be able to visit the church and celebrate holy mass in it.
Five phases of works are planned:
Phase A (duration of 4 to 6 months): analysis of boreholes and soil stabilization
Phase B (12 months): roof replacement, rehabilitation of the façade, installation of new gutters, replacement of pipes
Phase C (6 months): strengthening of the church’s loadbearing system
Phase D (More than 2 years): renovation of the frescoes
Phase E (4 to 6 months): replacement of electrical wiring, of the lighting system and of the fire protection system.
Once the works are completed, the church of Saint Polycarp will regain its original stature and will once again be able to welcome the faithful and visitors.
